She’s being rude, but why is she being rude? Tension.

A minor character is unexpectedly rude to the main character. I had to figure out why, and doing that let me tie it to the overarching narrative tension.

Speaking of tension, it’s been a couple of days since I could write or post and it’s made me antsy. Sorry about that. Vacation’s over, had to do a bunch of spring yard work, help the kids with their taxes. Life stuff.

But before life found a way to eat all my time, I did write most of a scene. And it wasn’t supposed to be a big deal, just showcase how Wendy’s bar is doing.

I had a family drop in for dinner. They’re some of the NPCs I sketched out as background characters the other day, when I realized I needed to flesh out the world more.

Two parents, three kids. Simple stuff. So why is the mom so rude to Wendy? I didn’t know, but she was. So I had to figure it out. And it turns out it dovetails right into the overarching opposition to the main character’s goals, letting me get tension into an otherwise normal scene that would be ripe to get cut.

It should also yield a good back-and-forth in dialog when Wendy finally has enough and snaps.

“Yeah? Well bite me!”

“That’s being considered!”

Other than that I’m spending more time planning the rest of the story than I am actually writing it. Meandering through the world is fun but it takes a really long time. I already know how this book ends so I need to make sure I get it there.

Now over 75k words, but a ways to go. I’ve also reset the deadline for April 30. We’ll see.
